On Friday we, Shirley, Benedicte and I, spent a couple of hours at the wonderful “Alexei Jawlensky” exhibit. As is our habit a good chunk of that time was spent copying. I was able to complete my painting of one of his “Helene” portraits entirely while we were in the gallery. The noise from our growling stomachs was deafening – it’s a wonder we weren’t tossed out.

There was a nor’easter outside blowing the trees back and forth, the sound of pouring rain beating against the windows, but I was cozy and deep into a new novel, when, all of a sudden iPat jumped into my lap and wouldn’t leave me alone until I doodled a bit.

That’s what he was doing.

The guy in the red tee was studying and every so often he would get up and walk around the tables. I used to do that. Dissipate stress.

“Didn’t she show us all this stuff a few weeks ago?”, everyone is mumbling sotto voce. “Hasn’t she got anything to do? Anyplace to be?” “Wait!”, someone exclaims excitedly, “look, it’s different from that other one. Just look.”

I was restless and I spotted the first attempted sketch of a Sargent drawing I copied while at the Met a few months ago. October. You all have already seen it. I abandoned the sketch I was doing in this app and re-drew it from scratch (in ArtRage) because I wasn’t getting the effect I wanted. I didn’t delete it though. The other day I was rooting around in this app and I spotted the failed drawing so I started painting on top of it and pretty soon a friend joined her.

Well, one thing led to another.

There’s a painting at the Met that does not make my heart go “pitter patter pitter patter”. Instead, my heart squeezes real tight and then “THUMP THUMP BANG THUMP” ensues. I crave to be influenced by that painting. So, around about dusk Sunday evening I drove to my local strip mall, parked in front of the store next To Carvel and drew the storefronts that would fit and then I drew the next ones on top of them. My feeble attempt to channel Dubuffet and turn a suburban one story strip mall into “Apartment Houses, Paris”.

There is a photo hanging out in iPat’s camera roll. I took it one day while walking on the High Line. I reduced it to shapes in one of my gridded notebooks and then I reduced it some more until I decided it was time to see if I could paint those shapes and end up with something “legible”. I added some graffiti.

I really have lots of things from when I was out and about in the city earlier this week. One is digital and four are analog. Everything needs finishing touches and I’m distracted by a couple of books. One is a graphic novel, “The Sculptor”, by Scott McCloud. I have to force myself to close it. I’m thankful that it is almost 500 pages but, even though, I’m zooming through it. The story takes place in NYC and his drawings are remarkable. Anyway. That why there are no new drawings – I’m distracted.
