Archives for the month of: February, 2017

I walked up to Columbus Circle. It was a spring-like day so I was able to comfortably stroll around and sketch outside.

My usual – before appointment – breakfast spot is either undergoing renovations in Penn Station or is gone forever. I found a nice place near the subway stop on 53rd Street. One problem, though, there are wait staff so I have to be conscious of table availability and not overstay my welcome by dawdling. So far it appears that there is a bigger take-out crowd so there are always plenty of empty tables at breakfast time.

I walk to my appointment via Madison Avenue past the backside of all the security barricades on 56th Street. The IBM public space (a good place to hang out) is within these barricades. I found out from one of the cops on the street that it is still accessible from 57th Street.

I took the bus to Penn Station and waited for my train to be announced.

Then I waited on the train as they figured out how to get us out of the city.

One would think the Hippo Ballerina followed by the Musicians would be enough. I thought so. Turns out the exhibition in the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center was pretty cool and everyone started sketching immediately. What was the exhibition? “Curtain Up: Celebrating the Last 40 Years of Theatre in New York and London”.

From the website: “Highlights include costumes and masks from Disney’s The Lion King…”. One of the characters below is a mystery to me.

We, the NYC Urban Sketchers, walked a couple of blocks to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where we sketched during a Juilliard Historical Performance. The music put smiles on our faces and rhythm into our art. What fun this was.

On Tuesday the NYC Urban Sketchers had a day full of wondrous activities. It started with a gigantic Hippo Ballerina, in Dante Park, and that was nothing but magical.

Gridded notebook and Pencil/Sharpie fine pen, photographed using iPad and then imported into Sketch Club. Sketched from direct observation. Color started on site and finessed later at home.
