I ease into the workday with a pre-clock-in break. How else do you catch the night shift on their dinner break?

The lunchroom is a great place for models. This is the first time my co-worker with the stripes happened to be there.

As soon as I saw them I was glad my train was the 2:54.

Waiting room.

There were a lot of people there but I wasn’t given much waiting time.

Ended the day just where it started. I was so exhausted that the walk back to Penn Station almost killed me.

Sitting down, commuters spread out in front of me and iPat jiggling in my purse, what else could I do?

We walked through Chelsea, up one block, down the next. In and out of galleries. At 23rd Street and Tenth Avenue we paused for a late lunch at New York Burger Co. Yum. We were pretty much exhausted by then but had one more stop to make. But there is never “one more” and things kept catching our eyes and into a few more galleries we dragged ourselves. Finally we reached David Zwirner Books, climbed the stairs, and saw a few rooms of Morandi Natura Morta (Still Life). Energy was restored (briefly) and we each started sketching.

Sketched from direct observation. Color (referred to photo I took of the painting) added later at home.

I had about 10 minutes before I was to meet Shirley and Benedicte upstairs in front of Penn Station’s KABOOZ so guess where I hung out. I’m so easily entertained.

The plan was to visit about a million Chelsea galleries. There were three Paul Kasmin galleries that we started with. The first had early David Hockney drawings which were wonderful. The third gallery contained Max Ernst bronze sculptures (1934-1967) which were mesmerizing in their delightfulness. Who knew? Certainly not me.

There was a bit of street entertainment as we watched a whole gaggle of construction workers surround two women with rolling suitcases. As each man split away from the huddled mass he was holding a container of food and soon there was a long line of hard-hatters sitting on the ground against the side of the first Kasmin gallery.

Elaine and I went off looking for a bathroom since there is none at the waste treatment plant nature walk. We walked a few blocks away and found a Dunkin’ without a restroom, a coffee shop behind closed and locked gates and, over there on the other side of the wide busy avenue, was a slightly ominous looking gas station with a smile for us. Phew.

Back at the Digester Eggs I took advantage of Elaine’s stillness as she sat on her stool and sketched.

The neighborhood is really very interesting and diverse. When it’s warmer perhaps we can come back and sketch the houses and shops. This is Alan, seated opposite me in The restaurant Esme. He whipped out his pen and sketchbook, and, with a smirk on his face drew me so iPat jumped out and returned the favor.

We left Starbucks (I could have spent all day sketching there) and found a parking spot near the entrance to Newtown Creek Nature Walk. It’s a designated, very polluted, superfund site that they’ve spruced up. The nature walk part was done very nicely. The elaborately imposing Digester Eggs take all the yucky waste sludge and make it not so yucky. If you google these eggs you’ll see some very nice photographs.

Next to the eggs was this building. One can only wonder what goes on in there.
