Sketching!

While the tables were being set up and the street was still quiet I found a stoop to sit on and sketched some NYC Urban Sketchers. It seems one of them was also sketching me.

I took the subway downtown to South Ferry and walked up to South Cove for Figure al Fresco. One of my favorite models and a nice breeze off the river made me forget how hot it was really.

It was a very hot and humid morning so instead of walking down to Union Square I walked the few long crosstown blocks to Fifth Avenue where I caught a downtown bus. Did I ever mention that I love riding a bus in NYC? First I spent some time in Strand Books examining every Diebenkorn book in the place – they had quite a few – which, of course, were all on the top shelf. One of the employees climbed a very tall ladder and handed them all down to me. Next stop was Jerry’s and a couple of purchases, one of which I utilized that evening. I walked back to 14th Street, entered Union Square Park, located a shady bench with a view, and sketched.

A large contingent of NYC Urban Sketchers will be attending the International Urban Sketchers Symposium in Chicago this year. Thirty-one, I believe. Last evening about half of us got together for a couple of hours so the newbies could get some information from previous Symposium attendees. There was beer, bratwursty things, conversation and sketching.

How lucky am I. I was sitting on a bench in the shade of a few large trees and a group decided to have their picnic/get together right in front of me. It took that guy quite awhile to get the bubble thing working.

Goodbyes took a long time. Lucky me again.

I asked a park worker (she was painting a metal fence) where the ladies room was – this was a park and I required very exact directions. On my way from the worker to the “facilities” I spotted this pair so I changed my plans. They were quite close to my bench and kept turning their heads in my direction. A little disconcerting but I was in the groove.

Ah ha! They weren’t looking at me at all. Friends showed up with lunch. Meanwhile, the worker who gave me directions passed by and asked if I found it. “I’m still on my way there” I replied as I sat and sketched. Mark walked by in the other direction headed to a bodega and Karen jogged past me energetically. I resumed heading towards the ladies when I spotted Peggy sketching.

Oh yeah, by the way, the humongous Triborough Bridge was crossing over the park from the Bronx and Manhattan, there were trillions of trees, a large body of water, all sorts of boats, another bridge, Hellsgate Bridge – but …

Spent all day last Sunday in Astoria Park (who knew there was such a spectacular park there) with the NYC Urban Sketchers.

Morning:

I thought I was doing some stealth sketching but it turned out he was one of us. Jokes on me. The park was so large I didn’t realize that zillions of Sketchers had turned up in a not-Manhattan borough. Where he was sitting was the end-of-day meeting spot. I was thinking I was lost – too many trees, too much fresh air.

End of day:

On Tuesday I took part in a collage/collagraph/printing 2-1/2 hour workshop as part of MoMA’s Prime Time. It was fun. Years ago I made a few very elaborate collagraphs and used a press to make the prints so the procedure wasn’t new to me – but, it was free and the atmosphere at these workshop thingies is pleasant and fun. While we paused to let the fast-drying glue dry, I sketched three of the ladies at the opposite table.

IPat and I briefly got serious. I managed to draw for 7 straight hours altogether and finally called it a day at 9:30. Time just flew by.
