I was a sketching machine that day. I dragged the chair again and copied this guy. I spotted him a few weeks prior and he stuck in my head. It’s a heavy chair.

This is old news already. Everything worked out. But. What a mess. When I got to Penn Station I found ALL THE TRAINS on my line WERE CANCELLED. There was a big fire in a building next to the tracks in Jamaica and everything had to be stopped. I was already exhausted from a whole day of art viewing and drawing. I know, poor me. Everyone else who was stuck was exhausted from a full day of actually working. I roamed around, tried not to panic/cry and found a seat when I discovered a not-my-train would get through, past the fire, make all local (mine) stops and I would get home after all. Phew.

I had time to copy another painting before we left Sotheby’s for lunch at Panera.

My friends and I are fans of Indian Contemporary art so a couple of times a year we find ourselves viewing art that will soon be auctioned off. A few weeks ago we gathered in Sotheby’s and spent a lot of time sketching.

She didn’t have a clue I was right next to her. Totally focused.

The train ride is usually too bumpy and the cars sway back and forth. This time things lined up perfectly. There was standing room only and I didn’t notice or care about the bumps and sways.

My friends and I were in and out of a gazillion galleries along Madison Avenue and down streets westward and eastward during Master Drawings Week at the end of January. In one, filled with drawings and paintings of birds, flowers and maps, was a room containing a Picasso, things by some of his friends and this Matisse. Shirley was copying an old master drawing so, “I’ll be down by the Matisse” I said as I headed for the stairway down. I had just enough time to quickly sketch and make some color notes.

Sketched on location. Color finished at home.
