Last week I attended an acryl gouache workshop way-up in Massachusetts taught by Gayle Kabaker and Jennifer Orkin Lewis (Augustwren)at Gayle’s house. The twenty participants worked outdoors at awning covered tables loaded with zillions of beautiful flower arrangements. The day started with introductions, demonstrations and then we were tasked with sketching (continuous line) four different, on one sketchbook page, 5-minute still life arrangements using a colored pencil. Yes. We were timed. Then we were to paint them – again timed. Needless to say, my paintings only vaguely represent the drawing that is underneath. I can easily sketch the confusion of rush hour in Penn Station but a vase of flowers just confuses me. Later that evening I finished up the paintings in my hotel room. I love a hotel room art project.
