The Symposium was finished and I was on my own for two days. But I had a paper map in my hand and knew I would not be led astray any more. I decided to start my day by going back to the Ponte Luis steps (probably not their proper name, if they actually have a name) that steeply weave back and forth here and there as they make their way treacherously down to the Rio Douro. I easily found where these steps began and, whereas I was appalled last Monday, just off the airplane and rather dopey, when I found myself in the same place, today I was energized and willing. I started down, sketching opportunities existed at every step – decisions decisions. I came upon a cafe halfway down with tables set up on the cobblestones between a series of steps and with a beautiful view. Obviously it was time for a snack and there was a plump croissant waiting for me.
