I attended the Spring Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology the other week, which was conveniently held in the Hotel Pennsylvania, right across Seventh Avenue from my frequent haunt, Penn Station. Even though I only work once a week I still need the full complement of continuing education credits – which is why I found myself sitting, before the meeting started, opposite a stranger at a big empty round table. I was drinking coffee, sketching her and looking around hoping to spot one of my co-workers. When I got up to refill my cup I spotted others from previous jobs long ago. It’s a shame how old they had all gotten whereas I, on the other hand, haven’t aged a day.
